Cultivating chillies in Australia using heirloom and heritage seeds can prove to be an enriching and vital pursuit, especially in the context of long-term emergencies and survival scenarios. Australia's diverse climate, ranging from tropical to temperate regions, provides an optimal environment for growing a wide variety of chilli peppers with unique flavours and characteristics. By relying on heirloom and heritage seeds, gardeners can preserve the genetic diversity of chilli varieties, ensuring their resilience in challenging conditions and safeguarding their availability for future generations. These seeds have been passed down through generations and have adapted to local climates over time, making them well-suited for sustainable and self-sufficient cultivation. Embracing the practice of growing your own chillies empowers Australians to secure a steady and reliable source of food, even during times of crisis. Whether you have a backyard garden, a dedicated chilli plot, or just a few pots on your balcony, the experience of nurturing and harvesting these vibrant and flavoursome chillies can bring immense satisfaction and a sense of security.

What is a Scoville Unit

The Scoville unit comes from the Scoville scale and serves as a method to gauge the spiciness or pungency of hot peppers. It quantifies the level of capsaicin, the chemical compound responsible for the fiery sensation, present in a pepper and expresses it as a numerical rating in Scoville Heat Units (SHUs).

Why Buy Heirloom?

Heirloom seeds refer to open-pollinated plant varieties that have been passed down from generation to generation within a family or community, often for several decades or even centuries. These seeds are typically saved and replanted each year, and are not subject to genetic modification or hybridisation. They are valued for their unique characteristics, such as flavour, colour, and adaptability to local growing conditions, and are often used in organic and sustainable agriculture.
