Description

Savotta Side Pouches 4L - 12L

The Savotta Side Pouch is a backpack side pouch with rudimentary internal organisation and external compression strap loops. Really nothing too fancy, but just what you need from a side pouch on your backpack. The zipper is covered for added water-repellency and protection from abrasion and dirt. The vertical webbing on the front keeps the compression straps of your backpack neatly in place over the pouch, allowing them to properly compress the pouch as well. These can also be used as attachment points for bungee cords, carabiners and stuff like that.

A 25mm webbing loop and D-ring on the top of the rear interior wall allow you to secure small and important stuff, the flat rear compartment offers rudimentary organisation for smaller gear. The bottom and bottom halves of the sides are lined with 210D polyamide for added abrasion resistance. A grommet offers drainage of any water that may seep into the pouch. The side pouch fits all Jääkäri series packs.

PALS attachment
The rear features Savotta's standard PALS attachment webbing system with tuck tabs. The middlemost horizontal webbing rows were eliminated as they didn’t really do anything besides add weight.

4 Litre
Optimal attachment for the 4 litre side pouch requires a width of 3 channels and a height of 5 (minimum 4) rows of PALS webbing. Your packs side compression straps will, when tightened down, eliminate any movement of the pouch and its contents.

6 Litre
The 2 vertical attachment straps leave approximately 9cm wide gap between them, this allows you to carry tools such as axes, fishing poles etc. stuffed down behind the pouch. Optimal attachment requires a width of 4 channels and a height of 6 (minimum 5) rows of PALS webbing. Your packs side compression straps will, when tightened down, eliminate any movement of the pouch and its contents. On packs with less than 6 rows of PALS webbing on the sides the bottom of the pouch will “hang”. You can let the side compression straps take care of that, or you can choose to attach the pouch one step higher up on the side of the pack.

8 Litre
The 2 vertical attachment straps leave a approximately 9cm wide gap between them, this allows you to carry gear such as axes, fishing poles etc. stuffed down behind the pouch. Optimal attachment requires a width of 4 channels and a height of 7 (minimum 6) rows of PALS webbing. Your packs side compression straps will, when tightened down, eliminate any movement of the pouch and its contents. Of Savotta's packs they recommend the 8L side pouch to be used only on the Jääkäri XL. Although not recommended you can attach it to smaller packs with an absolute minimum of 5 rows of PALS webbing on the sides (Jääkäri M and L for example), this is done by attaching the pouch one step higher and accepting that the bottom will be a bit floppy.

12 Litre
The 2 vertical attachment straps leave a approximately 13cm wide gap between them, this allows you to carry tools such as axes, fishing poles etc. stuffed down behind the pouch. Optimal attachment requires a width of 5 channels and a height of 8 (minimum 7) rows of PALS webbing. Your packs side compression straps will, when tightened down, eliminate any movement of the pouch and its contents. Of Savotta's packs they recommend the 12L side pouch to be used only on the Jääkäri XL. Although not recommended you can rig it to fit smaller packs with an absolute minimum of 6 rows of PALS webbing on the sides this is done by attaching the pouch one step higher and accepting that the bottom will be a bit floppy.

Exemplary Use for 4 Litre:
As a rather small pouch with only 4 litres capacity these don't fit anything huge, but this also makes these well suited for use on small backpacks with limited height/width on the sides. Here are some examples of what you can fit in one of these:
  • A medium size tarp and accessories
  • A lightweight puffy jacket, rain suit or poncho
  • A regular 1.5 litre beverage bottle, and some other stuff
  • A 0.7 litre insulated food jar

Exemplary Use for 6 Litre:
With a capacity of 6 litres this is very much a medium size pouch, not small, not huge. Something you would expect seeing on a 30 - 80 litre backpack. Here are some examples of what you can fit in one of these:

  • A hammock and underquilt

Exemplary Use for 8 Litre:
With a capacity of 8 litres this is clearly a larger side pouch, perhaps best used on large and tall backpacks of 60 - 100+ litres. Here are some examples of what you can fit in one of these:
